Random Trashcan is a system extension that randomly chooses a pair of full and empty icons for your trashcan at startup -- without mucking around with your System file (yay). Random Trashcan is "postcard-ware": it is free to use, and may be freely distributed (as long as it is unmodified and accompanied by this README file); all I ask in return is that you send me a postcard at the address at the bottom of this README. Any postcard is acceptable: a picture of your home town, pictures of anything weird or interesting (I love postcards of old movie theaters and diners), homemade postcards, etc etc etc.
System Requirements
Random Trashcan currently runs on System 7 or later, only; I hope to have it running under System 6 in the near future.
Random Trashcan is not currently PowerMac native. I hope to have a fat binary version ready soon.
Installation
Drag the Random Trashcan icon onto the System Folder on your hard drive; when the system blathers at you about wanting to put it in the Extensions Folder, tell it to go right ahead. Then, restart your Mac.
Details
When Random Trashcan is loaded at startup, it chooses one of the sets of trashcan icons stored in the extension to be your full and empty trashcans until the next time you (re-)start your Mac. Once in a while, Random Trashcan will use your current system trashcan, just to remind you what it looks like. This behavior may become configurable in the future; see "Coming Soon (Hopefully)", below.
Random Trashcan's icon will appear on your screen at startup; if it has difficulty doing what it has to do, you will see the icon drawn with a red "X" through it.
Coming Soon (Hopefully)
･ A Random Trashcan control panel, rather than an extension, with the ability to add and remove icons and control other behavior.
･ PowerMac native/fat binary version.

Most (OK, all) of the trashcan icons included in Random Trashcan were created by Rich Dellinger (richd@eden.com) and are copyright Rich D, 1995. Large collections of his icon art are available at your favorite Mac archive. Displayed here, for your edification and previewing delight, are all of the icons included in the extension:
